Someone asked me if you can sell a script and be a terrible untalented hack of a screenwriter and this was my reply
"Want to know why I stress the importance of a high concepts and killer titles?"
Here’s the truth... Making it as a working screenwriter, long term, and selling a script, one time, ARE NOT the same thing. They can occur simultaneously. You could sell a script and then turn out to have a long beautiful career because of your ability to write fun, well-paced screenplays that translate into rich movie ideas. Or, you turn out to be a one and doner. Usually because you, by accident, luck, or just being right one dang time, stumbled onto a damn brilliant movie idea.
