Making it as a writer REQUIRES you to seize opportunities in the ever-changing Industry
WHAT NOW?
These are undeniably turbulent times. Not just for writers, but for the industry at large (and the world, but let’s focus on screenwriting today). Major changes are happening, left and right. It’s chaotic, to say the least. We still don’t know the state of the movie theater. Sigh. There’s an abundance of movies that are released every week, more streamers than you can count, TikTok, YouTube, social media content - and a rise of a more powerful creator (a great thing), but it does make it tricky to navigate these waters…
Why? Well, screenwriters are not creators that fit into the content-creation mold.
They need a major financier to bring their blueprint to life. Yes, I said blueprint, because it is one. Even though it’s not. But nobody writes a script to release it on Kindle. It has a sole purpose: to be made into a movie.
If you’re a screenwriter, with your first finished script, you can’t even shop your material around now. I never thought I’d ever personally be in a situation where my scripts are literally frozen in time. But they are. They 1000 percent can not be sold until this strike is resolved. (This is a strange feeling, and I’m sure I’m not alone here…) My go-to joke now is that all us writers are longing for the days where the odds of selling were a million to one — feels a helluva lot better than ZERO odds…
…which streamlines me perfectly to the point of today’s article - PERSPECTIVE.
You can sit and wait for the strike to resolve and the doors to reopen for you to try and throw your darts again (or… you can find a way to look at this scenario as a massive moment of opportunity).
